Texas Children's Hospital & Baylor College of Medicine Site Visit

Remarkable Facility
Dr. Ells Arjmand, a former member of the Southern Illinois School of Medicine's (SIU SOM) Surgery department and a Springfield native, recently toured the MCLI and was impressed by our "remarkable facility." Dr. Arjmand was so excited that he reached out to Aimee Allbritton, PhD, Vice President of Organization Development and Chief Learning Officer, to bring some of his colleagues for a site visit! Dr. Arjmand is currently the Chief of Service for Pediatric Otolaryngology and the Bobby Alford Endowed Chair in Pediatric Otolaryngology at Texas Children's Hospital (TCH) as well as the Professor of Otolaryngology at Baylor College of Medicine. Joining him for the site visit are J. Mallory Caldwell, Senior Vice President of TCH and Charles D. Fraser Jr., MD, Chief of Congenital Heart Surgery and Cardiac Surgeon-in-Charge at TCH. Dr. Arjmand also noted that Dr. J. Roland Folse was the department chair during his time at SIU SOM and "I have great memories of working at both MMC and SJH."

Why the MCLI?
The Texas Children's Hospital, which you may have seen featured on the TLC show "The Little Couple," currently has a Pediatric Simulation Center. According to their website (www.texaschildrens.org), "It is a multi-disciplinary, hospital based center providing hands-on pediatric and obstetric simulation training in a realistic environment to improve patient safety and patient care." Dr. Arjmand encouraged this site visit because TCH "is looking to explore ideas to develop their own surgery focused simulation center." The visit on Friday, October 13th will include a presentaiton by Dr. Allbritton before the tour begins on the 1st floor. Varying simulations will be presented by the Springfield Fire Department and SIU SOM Emergency Medicine Residents while the group tours the 3rd floor Simulation Center. The J. Roland Folse, MD Surgical Skills Center will also host the group where a skills lab will be taking place with additional SIU SOM Residents. Guests will gather for lunch and a debrief to conclude their visit.
