Hands-On Healthcare has something for everyone!

During the Perioperative Hands-On Healthcare session, held on February 8th, primarily utilizing the Surgical Skills Center, attendees got to experience three simulation stations, including removing a gallbladder, knee arthroscopy and intubation. Guests also viewed a presentation on the five sterile processing areas which explained each step involved in proper sterilization of surgical instruments and were able to practice assembling instrument trays by matching them to photos of ready-to-use trays.

During the gallbladder simulation, students inserted a camera, scopes and trocars through the manikin's inflated abdomen to retrieve a mock gallbladder made out of a small balloon. A vide of an actual gallbladder procedure was shown as well, to show what a real surgery is like. Operating Room staff were on site to explain their roles and show how the instruments are used during this type of procedure.

At the knee arthroscopy station, attendees inserted a camera and scope into the knee joint and used a probe to manipulate the anatomy which allowed them to see the torn meniscus and other abnormalities associated with the knee anatomy.

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA) and Anesthesiologists roles were explained to attendees at the Anesthesia station. Guests were able to intubate a manikin with a GlideScope, blades and ET tubes.

Next month's sessions is scheduled for Monday, March 5th which is another session that will be hosted during normal business hours, from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. focusing on the Pharmacy.

Attendees will have the opportunity to tour the pharmacy and visit a station centered around medication compounding, view a simulation including a pharmacist, a patient and other health care providers and learn about education requirements of pharmacy staff. Be sure to share this educational event on Facebook with anyone looking to join the healthcare workforce!
