SIU Graduate Medical Education Committee
Southern Illinois University (SIU) School of Medicine was established in 1970 to assist the people of central and southern Illinois in meeting their health care needs through education, patient care, research, and service to the community. For more than 40 years, the medical school has emphasized teaching and achieved national recognition as an innovator in medical education. Their Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs offer the best of both possible worlds - considerable medical sophistication in a small city atmoshpere. All of the SIU training programs provide outstanding preparation in the scientific, clinical and humanistic aspects of medicine. The GME Committee meets to maintain strong affiliations with multiple hospitals and regional medical centers within a largely rural population base to create a synergy of primary, specialty and tertiary care training experiences. In turn the residency and fellowship training is informed by an institution-wide devotion to science and educational excellence. SIU GME has a long-standing tradition of active hands-on experiential learning and faculty teaching in an atmosphere of collegiality and respect. An emphasis on personal growth and supported autonomy prepares graduates for the furture and to function in any setting. The SIU Graduate Medical Education Committee will be meeting on June 16 in the Schnirring Board Room. They began meeting at the MCLI in June of 2015, which makes them one of the first guests to occupy the building.
